Thinking skill in seeing issues, problems and opportunities in a larger and broader perspective and being able to understand the inter-relation of all the elements involved so that the best course of action could be formulated to achieve the desired goals.
Visible Thinking is a flexible and systematic research-based approach to integrating the development of students’ thinking with content learning across subject matters. An extensive and adaptable collection of practices, Visible Thinking has a double goal: on the one hand, to cultivate students’ thinking skills and dispositions, and, on the other, to deepen content learning.
If we agree to stay grounded in this important purpose, our definitions of higher-order thinking for the purposes of this book can be much more modest and practical. we consider the kinds of higher-order thinking that are stated or implied in state content standards and classroom learning objectives. Definitions that I find helpful fall into three categories: (1) those that define higher-order thinking in terms of transfer, (2) those that define it in terms of critical thinking, and (3) those that define it in terms of problem solving.
