I agree with you. I think The Simpsons stands apart from the hordes of shows that were clearly inspired by it because it's filled with as many allusions to classical literature and culture as references to contemporary pop culture. It's strength was its ability to integrate all of those references into something that was already a funny concept. Contrast that to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which represents the worst of that tradition and isn't worth watching under any circumstances.

Rashomon is, among other things, a cinematic meditation on the elusiveness of truth. The movie consists of three different versions of the same set of events, illustrating the unreliability of memory, the limitations of eye-witness testimony, and the subjectivity of reality. Alex and Laura (spoiler) hook up, and their differing accounts of what happened during their time together are quite revealing.

Also, at least one (maybe two?) of the Sophie episodes are loosely paired with the Paul episodes, in that (mild spoiler) Paul (the therapist) confesses to his therapist whether therapy is really helping Sophie. I found this discussion not only interesting but necessary, since the answer was a big question mark in relation to not only Sophie but several of the characters.
