Living life is challenging. It is full of obstacles. It is full of disappointment. As one philosopher said, “From the moment we’re born, the world begins conspiring against us.” And it seems true. For all the troubles we face, the light often struggles to make its way through the darkness. So, in the midst of this depressing situation, what are some things we can do to remain optimistic and hopeful? Where can we turn for peace? Who can we lean on for encouragement? If we were to turn to books, for example, what are the best books to provide motivation?
Bibliotherapy is not new
The notion of finding emotional power and strength from the written word is not new. When people turn to books for therapy, it’s called bibliotherapy. Whether it’s a theological text like the Bible or a self-help book like “The Power of Positive Thinking“, good books have the ability uplift and motivate unlike anything else. For some people, books are like friends. They are a trusted source of influence and companionship that many people would rather turn to than another human.
Although, there are countless books that can provide inspiration and motivation, here is my list of motivational books that I think everyone should have on their bookshelf.
The 7 books everyone should have on their shelf
The Greatest Salesman in the World
The Power of Positive Thinking
The Hiding Place
Education of a Wandering Man
The Holy Bible
7 Habits of Highly Effective People
What Got You Here Won’t Get You There
Books are powerful if the words they contain are powerful. It’s tempting to think that Barnes and Noble is full of powerfully wonderful books because all of the books are marketed with flashy titles and beautiful covers. However, a careful inspection will reveal that most of the books are shallow attempts by authors to make a quick buck. Finding a great book that provides a deep well of comfort, strength, and motivation is a little more challenging to do. However, if you begin with my list of 7 must-haves (above), you’ll be on the right track.
